Cedar, OSU’s Therapy and Wellness Dog
Cedar, the therapy and wellness dog, joined Oregon State University’s Department of Public Safety in May 2022. An English Labrador known for his calm, friendly demeanor, Cedar helps comfort community members across campus. Selected through Working Dogs Oregon, he completed specialized training to remain relaxed in crowds, around sirens, and in high stress environments.
Cedar’s Role on Campus
Cedar spends his workdays providing comfort and emotional support to students, faculty, staff, and community members. He regularly visits campus spaces to help reduce stress, attends university and community events, and supports DPS staff during stressful calls or long shifts. Cedar is often seen walking campus with officers or relaxing in DPS spaces. He lives with his full‑time handler, Officer Patrick Sloma, his wife Katrina, and their dog Nova.
A Beloved Community Member
Cedar has become a beloved part of Beaver Nation, easily recognized by his gentle nature and orange vest. His calm presence has helped de‑escalate emotional situations and provide comfort when it’s needed most. When he’s not working, Cedar enjoys long walks, hiking, and playing with Nova. He also hosts weekly “office hours” for canine comfort on Tuesdays from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Memorial Union ID Center and Thursdays from 3–5 p.m. at the Valley Library.
