The Department of Public Safety is seeking an Operations Captain. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, public safety professional position.

The provision of public safety on OSU’s Corvallis campus will undergo a transition when the three intragovernmental agreements for licensed law enforcement services with Oregon State Police end on December 31, 2020. OSU leadership has determined the best course of action to ensure the continuation of law enforcement services in a manner that is aligned with the values and principles of OSU is to bring this function within the university.

Effective January 1, 2021, pursuant to ORS 352.118 and 352.121, OSU will utilize its own sworn officers to provide law enforcement services for the Corvallis campus.

The Department of Public Safety is now recruiting lateral, sworn law enforcement professionals to lead, supervise and expand a foundation of complex, compassionate, and diversified safety services for the university community. Now is the time to join the new adventure and opportunity to develop, lead, and supervise within the newly constituted Department of Public Safety (DPS): as the OSU Police Captain

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Public Safety & Chief of Police, the OSU Police Captain is a sworn position responsible for the supervision, planning, coordination, and oversight of the activities and operations of staff assigned to the police and public safety patrol, investigations, and operations. This position will work independently in performing regular assignments, reviewing, and participating in the work of law enforcement. This position provides leadership, support, development, and accountability for police officers and security/public safety officers assigned to DPS.

The OSU Police Captain will have regular daily contact with all members of the Oregon State University campus community, including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and members of the public.

The OSU Police Captain oversees day-to-day patrol-related operations; monitors, observes, and assists police sergeants, police officers, public safety

officers, and other staff as necessary. This position will provide short-term and long-term guidance, coordination, and evaluation of work assignments. This position will supervise sworn sergeants who supervise sworn police and security/public safety officers and act in the capacity of a sworn officer to the full extent of all federal, state, county, and university laws, regulations, and policies as necessary. This position participates as a member of the Department of Public Safety leadership team to contribute to the strategic and operational oversight of the full department and will stand in for the Chief as necessary
